Z_Depth in After Effects and Photoshop

Picture made by using z_depth.    See animation

  Coordinates XYZ

DOF, or depth of field, is achieved in a 3D image by using z_depth.

Coordinates in a 3D image is X,Y and Z, where Z is a messaure of the distance to

objects in the image.

3D image     file CAR.jpg                                                      Z_depth image        file CAR_z.jpg

Dark means close to the camera and lighter means further away from the camera.

When you combine those files in a software, you can make a shollow depth of field.

Z_DEPTH IN AFTER EFFECTS

1. Import the files to AE and drag to timeline:

2. Add filter to the first layer.    Effect/BlurSharpen/LensBlur.

3. In Effects Controls, click the Depth Map Layer, click the _z  file.

4. Tweak the Blur Focal Distance to find your focus point..

In Iris Radius you can choose how blurred you want the picture.

5. Made an animation of a focus pull, using key frames.

6. See animation.
